Sabarimala will be opened today for the annual two-month-long Mandala Pooja-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. Melsanthi Krishnadas Nampoothiri will open the Sreekovil of the temple at 5.30 pm in the presence of Thantri Mahesh Mohanaru. No ritual will be conducted at the Sreekovil as an ongoing practice of the temple.
The installation ceremony of new Sabarimala melsanthi Sanakaran Nampoothiri will be held at 6.30 pm. As part of the ceremony, Thantri Mahesh Mohanaru will conduct kalasabhishekam on the new melsanthi in front of the Sreekovil. After the kalsabhishekam, the thantri accompanied by the new melsanthi will go inside the Sreekovil and pass on the “moolamantram” of Lord Ayyappa in the ears of the melsanthi. After the installation ceremony of the new Sabarimala melsanthi, similar installation ceremony of E S Unnikrishnan as the new Malikappuram melsanthi will be held in front of the Malikappuram temple at 7.30 pm by the thantri.
The ceremony in connection with the handing over of the key of the Sreekovil of Sabarimala temple will be held at 11 pm. As part of the ceremony, Krishnadas Nampoothiri will hand over the key after locking the Sreekovil of the temple to Sabarimala Devaswom administrative officer Somasekharan Nair at 11 pm. Immediately after receiving the key, the administrative officer will hand over the key to new melsanthi Sankaran Nampoothiri. The new melsanthi will take charge for a one-year tenure on the first day of the Mandapala Pooja on November 17. The new melsanthi, as an ongoing practice, will open the Sreekovil at 4 am on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the tenure.
