This magnificient, majestic, beautiful gopuram is that of Vada Badhrasayi Temple, SriVilliputhur. This temple is known for the famous Andaal, who fell in love with Lord Krishna and resolved to marry only Him. She composed and sang the unmatching Thiruppavai in Tamil which is sung by a lot many people during the month of December (Margazhi month).
One has to learn Tamil and drink the nectar of this Thiruppavai slokas. Such devotion, such love, such depth and such many many goodness and sweetness are there in them. This gopuram is the emblem of Tamil Nadu Goverment.
Here is the Perumal who is called as Vada Badhrasayi whose chief priest's daughter was Andaal. He got this girl child from a Thulasi vanam (bush) nearby the temple. She grew singing and praising Lord Krishna. During the month of Margazhi (close to December), she takes her friends to the temple early in the morning, singing this Thiruppavai. Also, she prepares the garland for the Lord and wears it on her own shoulders to see if it will suit the Lord. This is not normally practised by Hindus and infact, it is considered to be a sin or paap. Andaal is unaware of this and she just ensures that the garland is best fit for the Lord. One day, her father notices it and becomes very frustrated and upset. That night in his dreams, Lord Krishna appears and convinces him that He is more happier to wear the garland that is worn and given by Andaal. She is thus called fondly as 'Soodi kodutha sudar kodi' meaning, the beautiful one who wore the garland and gave'. Eventually, she marries the Lord in the same village.
